I met a living example of the goodness of America this week. He had been to New Orleans in the wake of Katrina and seen the devastation. He had also seen the bureaucratic in-fighting that was keeping people from getting the help they need. So he decided to get involved – by building and transporting kitchen tables and chairs to the folks who were sitting in empty houses. His neighbors heard about his work and lent their time and sweat, and hundreds of families in Louisiana are now sitting at kitchen tables made by their neighbors in Lawrence County Pennsylvania. All without a single bureaucrat in sight. It’s easy to give in to the doom and gloom predictors. But one man in northwest PA is showing us that America’s spirit and strength is not now, and has never really been, in Washington – it’s in the kitchen tables that built this nation. And are quietly rebuilding her today.

P.S. In our noon prayer time, please remember John and Kathy. John suffered a serious stroke seven months ago, and is coming home today. He and Kathy have been living examples of faith and courage throughout his long recovery. Let’s pray that they are especially blessed in the days ahead.
